NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed on Monday that the Philadelphia Eagles will be the designated team for the league’s inaugural game in São Paulo, Brazil.
The Eagles’ matchup in South America is slated for Week 1 against an undisclosed opponent, to be announced before the release of the full 2024 regular-season schedule in the spring. Scheduled for Friday, September 6, 2024, this marks the first Friday night Week 1 game in over 50 years for the NFL (last played on September 18, 1970, Cardinals at Rams).
Goodell emphasized the significance of this inaugural international game in South America, showcasing the NFL’s expanding global presence. The decision to kick off Week 1 on a Friday night aims to underscore the league’s international growth and aspirations.
In December, the NFL announced plans for a regular-season game in Brazil during the 2024 season, to be held at Corinthians Arena, a venue renowned for hosting various significant sporting events, including six matches during the 2014 FIFA Men’s World Cup.
São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes expressed pride in the city’s selection as the host, highlighting the economic impact and job creation anticipated from this historic event, set on the eve of Independence Day. He sees it as a testament to São Paulo’s standing as a premier global destination for sports and entertainment.
The Eagles join the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Carolina Panthers as designated teams for the 2024 International Games. The Bears, Vikings, and Jaguars are set for games in London, while the Panthers will play in Munich.
