Six batters are making an impression for the Detroit Tigers in the ongoing spring season.
DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have completed 10 games in their spring training lineup, and a group of six hitters has already distinguished themselves, both positively and negatively.
Andy Ibanez, with a record of 5-for-17 including 3 home runs, 1 double, 1 walk, and four strikeouts, stands out for his power contributions to the Tigers this spring. He remains the only player with multiple home runs this season, hitting his third against Yankees starter Nestor Cortez on Sunday.
With Colt Keith likely to start at second base, it remains uncertain how much playing time Ibanez will receive at the beginning of the season. However, given his strong performance last year and his recent power surge, he is ensuring that A.J. Hinch will find ways to include him in the lineup.
Javier Baez, on the other hand, has yet to register a hit in 11 at-bats, striking out five times. While spring training statistics for veteran players like Baez may not always be indicative, considering his performance in his first two seasons with Detroit, observers hope to see signs of improvement. However, Baez’s struggles continue, with little evidence of the swing changes discussed.
Zach McKinstry’s standout statistic for the spring is his eight walks and zero strikeouts in six at-bats, resulting in an impressive .714 on-base percentage. McKinstry has also demonstrated power with a homer and a double, showcasing his ability to read pitches effectively.
Ryan Kreidler, with a 3-for-9 record including one homer and five walks, also stands out for his high on-base percentage of .571. Known for his defensive prowess in the infield, Kreidler’s offensive consistency has been a challenge throughout his minor league career. However, if he can maintain his current performance, he may earn consideration for a promotion to the major league roster.
Eddys Leonard has shown promise as a breakout player this spring, tallying a 5-for-13 record with one homer and two doubles. His ability to consistently make solid contact without striking out has been particularly impressive, with Leonard boasting 14 plate appearances without a strikeout.
Wenceel Perez’s spring has been marked by ups and downs, with a 3-for-10 record including one homer and three walks. Although Perez’s defensive struggles have limited his infield opportunities, he has demonstrated his offensive capabilities with a .462 OBP and a disciplined approach at the plate.
