Casey Mize pitches four shutout innings in Detroit Tigers’ 7-0 victory against the New York Yankees.

The Detroit Tigers secured a 7-0 victory against the New York Yankees on Thursday at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.

With this win, the Tigers’ Grapefruit League record stands at 12-8-1.

In the game, Casey Mize displayed an impressive performance, continuing to prepare for the regular season and accumulate innings after his last appearance for the Tigers in 2022. Mize pitched four innings without allowing any runs against a Yankees lineup featuring notable starters like Alex Verdugo, Gleyber Torres, Jose Trevino, and Anthony Rizzo. His final stat line included four innings pitched, zero runs conceded, two hits surrendered, two walks issued, and four strikeouts.

Mize encountered a bit of trouble in the fourth inning, allowing a triple to Trent Grisham, but he managed to escape the inning unscathed by striking out Oscar Gonzalez. Furthermore, he secured the win thanks to early run support provided by Kerry Carpenter, who hit a home run and capitalized on a fielding error by Rizzo, as well as an RBI double by Riley Greene in the initial innings, propelling the Tigers to a 3-0 lead. The Tigers extended their lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning with key contributions from Carpenter and Colt Keith.

In terms of his pitching performance, Mize looked strong throughout his four innings, delivering 59 pitches, 34 of which were strikes. He induced seven swings and misses, including three strikeouts. Mize showcased a variety of pitches, including fastballs, sliders, splitters, and knuckle curves, with his fastball reaching speeds of up to 97.3 mph.

Offensively, Carpenter emerged as the standout hitter for the Tigers, contributing significantly to their offensive output. Mark Canha, Riley Greene, and others also made notable contributions at the plate against Yankees pitcher Marcus Stroman.

Following Mize’s impressive outing, the Tigers bullpen, led by Andrew Chafin, Shelby Miller, Alex Lange, Miguel Díaz, and Andrew Vasquez, continued to stifle the Yankees’ offense, conceding only three hits collectively.

Overall, it was a dominant performance by the Tigers both on the mound and at the plate, resulting in a comprehensive victory over the Yankees.
