Tennessee Football Signs New Deal With Willie Martinez

Willie Martinez, the coach of Tennessee’s defensive backs, has extended his contract with the team. Martinez agreed to stay in Knoxville, Tennessee, through the 2024 season on a one-year contract, as first reported by VolQuest. Since head coach Josh Heupel joined the team, Martinez has filled that position.

For the upcoming season, Martinez will earn $540,000. Moreover, Tennessee revealed that Rodney Garner, their defensive line coach, has been extended through the 2025 campaign. Securing the remaining coaching staff was crucial, given they lost two assistants in the summer. They intend to leverage their great continuity on both sides of the ball to get themselves into their first College Football Playoff berth.

In 2023, Tennessee’s defense showed a substantial improvement over the previous two seasons, which was positive. During the season’s first weeks, the defensive backs performed admirably; nevertheless, they encountered difficulties towards the end of the campaign. We’ll see what Martinez’s plan was for Tennessee as they attempt to revamp their secondary in light of the fact that numerous players he originally recruited are now playing.
