Despite these accomplishments, the Cowboys have not advanced to the NFC title game with Prescott as their starter, and his playoff record stands at 2-5. After the Cowboys’ 48-32 defeat to the Green Bay Packers, some analysts questioned Prescott’s future with the team.
During an episode of First Take, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky suggested that the Cowboys should undergo a rebuild, advocating for changes at both the quarterback position and the head coach role currently held by Mike McCarthy. Orlovsky expressed this opinion in the aftermath of the Cowboys’ disappointing playoff loss to the Packers.
In contrast, Stephen A. Smith argued against parting ways with Prescott, urging the team to retain him. Smith emphasized the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for Prescott and highlighted upcoming contract extensions for key players like Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb. He also pointed out that, in his view, no available quarterback surpasses Prescott’s abilities.
As Prescott enters his ninth season in the NFL amidst contract negotiations, he faces significant pressure to guide the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl appearance in nearly three decades.
