Matt Hennessy may play a significant part in the Eagles’ revamped offensive line.

Since 2020, Sua Opeta has commenced 10 games on the offensive line, while Jack Driscoll has started 17. Despite their tenure as dependable backups for the Eagles, both were released without much resistance for one primary reason: the emergence of Matt Hennessy.

Opeta, initially joining as an undrafted rookie in 2019, and Driscoll, drafted in the 4th round in 2020, contributed significantly to the offensive line. However, the retirement of Jason Kelce triggered a series of changes, including Cam Jurgens transitioning to center, Opeta signing with the Buccaneers, Driscoll joining the Dolphins, and the Eagles acquiring Hennessy.

Hennessy’s specific role remains uncertain. “I’m here to compete,” he stated. “Position flexibility is crucial to (Jeff Stoutland). I’ve played various positions in the NFL, so while I’m unsure of my exact role, I’m prepared to compete and contribute to the team’s success.”

During his time with the Falcons, Hennessy demonstrated versatility by playing over a thousand snaps at center and a couple hundred at left guard. Despite missing the previous season due to a knee injury, he expressed readiness to engage fully in spring practices.

Hennessy’s adaptability presents options for the Eagles. He could contend for the right guard position, serve as a backup for all interior spots, or even fill in at left guard if needed. His ability to play multiple positions enhances his understanding of the game, a quality valued by Stoutland.

The decision to join the Eagles was influenced by several factors, including their winning tradition, formidable offensive line, proximity to his college alma mater (Temple), and his rapport with Stoutland.
