The Cowboys are interested in acquiring Stephon Gilmore, but the cornerback is receptive to the idea of returning to the Patriots.

FRISCO – Stephon Gilmore has expressed positive sentiments regarding the possibility of reuniting with the Dallas Cowboys. However, it seems he is also quietly contemplating a return to the New England Patriots.

During the Super Bowl, Gilmore stated his desire to re-sign with the Cowboys, where he had a successful 2023 season before becoming a free agent. He emphasized the potential of the team and his eagerness to contribute to their success, but acknowledged that discussions cannot commence until March.

Now that March has arrived, the situation may have evolved in two significant ways. Firstly, negotiations are underway. Secondly, considering the limited activity of the Cowboys in free agency for bolstering their roster, even optimistic Cowboys fans might question whether the team still possesses the necessary components for success.

Despite Gilmore’s impactful season with the Cowboys, their apparent reluctance to offer a substantial contract, especially for a player of his caliber, suggests otherwise. Consequently, reports from Boston indicate that Gilmore would be receptive to rejoining the Patriots, albeit they are currently considered less competitive than the Cowboys in the 2024 season.

In both New England and Dallas, there’s discussion about Gilmore’s potential role as a mentor, particularly to young cornerbacks like Christian Gonzalez and Trevon Diggs. However, Gilmore, now 33, is in a position to prioritize between pursuing financial rewards and seeking championship contention, or ideally, both.

Currently rehabilitating from shoulder surgery, Gilmore’s market value may be impacted, thus explaining the absence of significant contract offers. Nevertheless, his reputation as a skilled player and a valuable teammate makes him an attractive prospect for teams like the Cowboys and the Patriots, who could benefit from his contributions both on and off the field.
