The Tennessee Volunteers ought to actively seek out a highly skilled running back who is poised to join the Transfer Portal.

The Tennessee Volunteers have reportedly been impressive on offense throughout spring, particularly with Nico Iamaleava showing the promise expected of a five-star recruit. Their wide receiver corps appears highly talented. However, the running back position hasn’t garnered as much praise.

Dylan Sampson seems to be an exception, emerging as a vocal leader during spring practices. While the team acknowledges the versatility of Cam Seldon and the athleticism of freshman Peyton Lewis, there’s still a perceived need at the position, especially after losing Jaylen Wright and Jabari Small to the NFL.

With the Transfer Portal opening soon, rumors suggest that top running back prospects will be available. Dallan Hayden from Ohio State is one potential target, but the standout is Damien Martinez, who is reportedly set to enter the portal despite turning down a significant NIL offer from Oregon State. At 6’0″ and nearly 240 pounds, Martinez is a formidable running back with impressive early career stats.

Having surpassed 1000 rushing yards as a true freshman and exceeding 1300 scrimmage yards in the following season, Martinez is considered one of the top every-down running backs in the nation, with NFL potential. Despite interest from other schools, Tennessee should aggressively pursue Martinez to elevate their offense, especially given their need for a reliable red zone threat.

Acquiring Martinez would alleviate pressure on young quarterback Nico Iamaleava and running back Dylan Sampson, potentially transforming Tennessee’s offense and providing them with a powerful weapon against tough SEC opponents.
