Gonzaga recruit Michael Ajayi has declared his intention to enter the NBA Draft.
Michael Ajayi announced on social media Sunday that he will declare for the 2024 NBA Draft while maintaining his college eligibility. The 6-foot-7 wing from Kent, Washington, made this decision almost two weeks after revealing his transfer to Gonzaga from Pepperdine. According to NCAA regulations, Ajayi has until May 29 to retract his name from draft consideration to preserve his eligibility for the upcoming college season.
During the 2023-24 season, Ajayi showcased impressive performance, averaging 17.2 points and 9.9 rebounds, leading to his selection for the All-WCC first team. Notably, he achieved shooting percentages of 46.7% from the field and 47.0% from beyond the arc on 2.5 attempts per game. At the time of his transfer to Gonzaga on March 27, Ajayi was ranked sixth in On3.com’s transfer portal rankings.
Ajayi gained recognition as one of the West Coast Conference’s most skilled scorers after excelling for two seasons at Pierce Community College in Puyallup, Washington. During his time there, he was honored as the 2022 Northwest Athletic Conference West Region’s Most Valuable Player and the West Region’s Freshman of the Year.
While Ajayi’s potential in the NBA remains uncertain, with his name absent from prominent mock drafts, another season under Mark Few’s coaching at the NCAA level could enhance his professional prospects, as demonstrated by the development of players like Julian Strawther and Drew Timme last year.
As of now, Ajayi is the sole Gonzaga player to declare for the NBA Draft.
