Zerk-Thatcher is flourishing within the Port Adelaide environment.
Zerk-Thatcher is finding success within the culture of Port Adelaide. One of the latest additions to the team’s defensive unit, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, is experiencing more than just changes on the field at Alberton.
Just six months ago, Aliir Aliir often stood out prominently in the Port Adelaide defense, towering over shorter teammates who frequently had to play beyond their height. However, things have shifted now.
“Sometimes, the size of our players can be intimidating for the opposition,” notes Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley. “It can slow them down… and that’s something we haven’t had much of until now. Finally, we have some of that.”
With players like Esava Ratugolea (197cm) and Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (195cm) joining the ranks, Aliir Aliir (194cm) is no longer the tallest figure in Port Adelaide’s defensive lineup. This alleviates pressure from players like Ryan Burton and Miles Bergman, allowing them to focus on their defensive roles.
List manager Jason Cripps has addressed a crucial need with strategic trades, acquiring Ratugolea from Geelong and Zerk-Thatcher from Essendon. This reaffirms Port Adelaide’s status as an attractive destination for players.
Five weeks into the new AFL season, with a revamped defense and Tyson Goldsack as the new line coach, the defensive statistics speak volumes:
– No games conceding 100 points or more.
– An average score conceded of 73 points, an improvement from last year’s average of 85 points.
– Total points conceded standing at 363, making Port Adelaide one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league.
As the season progresses, the defensive partnerships between Aliir, Ratugolea, and Zerk-Thatcher are expected to strengthen, contributing to the team’s overall performance.
“We support them significantly with our game plan, particularly limiting opposition entries into our defensive 50,” says Hinkley.
Zerk-Thatcher’s return to South Australia through the trade window indicates his commitment to Port Adelaide, setting aside any previous allegiances he may have had to other AFL clubs in Adelaide.
