St. Louis City and Sporting KC settle for a draw in a match marked by numerous fouls.
In a match marred by rough play, St. Louis City’s Tomas Totland salvaged a 3-3 draw against Sporting Kansas City with a late goal in second-half stoppage time on Saturday night. The game saw a total of 36 fouls and five yellow cards. Joao Klauss contributed a goal and two assists for St. Louis (2-1-6, 12 points), while Kansas City (2-2-5, 11 points) seemed to take control when Erik Thommy put them ahead 3-2 in the 77th minute. Trailing 2-1 and growing frustrated with St. Louis’ physical style, Kansas City leveled the score thanks to an own goal by the visitors in the 65th minute. Johnny Russell’s long free kick found Daniel Salloi, whose shot deflected off goalkeeper Roman Burki’s hands and into the net. Thommy’s goal came after Andreu Fontas fed him a pass as he surged up the left side, outracing the defense to score past Burki. Kansas City opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Alan Pulido, with Willy Agada assisting. St. Louis equalized in the 31st minute when Chris Durkin dispossessed Tim Leibold and set up Klauss for his third goal of the season. They then took the lead 2-1 in first-half stoppage time when Klauss won the ball back, dribbled through the Kansas City defense, and set up Celio Pompeu for a shot from outside the box past goalkeeper Tim Melia.
