Lamont Butler pledges commitment to Mark Pope and the Kentucky basketball program! | Podcast for the Kentucky Wildcats

The Kentucky Wildcats make a significant addition to their roster once again, with the news of San Diego State transfer Lamont Butler committing to the team, as reported by KSR’s Matt Jones.

Butler’s journey in college basketball has been remarkable, evolving from an under-the-radar recruit to a standout player known for his defensive prowess, particularly on the perimeter.

Originally a three-star recruit in the class of 2020, Butler chose San Diego State over offers from schools like Washington, Harvard, Colorado, Boise State, and Saint Mary’s. His breakout came in his second year, earning Mountain West All-Defensive Team honors and making significant contributions on both ends of the floor.

In his third year, Butler became a key figure in San Diego State’s run to the national championship game, showcasing his abilities on both offense and defense, including hitting a buzzer-beater in a semifinal game.

Butler brings a wealth of experience to Kentucky, with 11 NCAA Tournament games under his belt and a reputation for performing well on the big stage. His defensive prowess earned him the title of Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season.

Despite primarily playing as a shooting guard, Butler has shown versatility in occasionally running the point. However, Kentucky may still be in search of a true point guard to complement Butler’s skills.

With Butler’s commitment, Kentucky adds another piece to their 2024-25 roster, joining Amari Williams, Travis Perry, and Colin Chandler. Expect more additions in the coming days as Kentucky actively pursues transfers to complete their lineup under the leadership of Mark Pope.
