The Senators have Craig Berube in their sights.

The Senators’ season ended below expectations, prompting the dismissal of head coach D.J. Smith in December. Jacques Martin temporarily took over, but Ottawa’s performance remained lackluster, culminating in a 26th overall finish in the NHL standings.

As a result, the Senators are on the hunt for a new head coach this summer, with Craig Berube emerging as a potential candidate. Elliotte Friedman disclosed on his 32 Thoughts podcast that Ottawa is engaged in discussions with Berube, and sources from various teams suggest that the Senators have already interviewed him.

Berube, a highly regarded coach, presents an attractive option for Ottawa, especially considering the limited competition for his services. Currently, the San Jose Sharks are the only other team seeking a head coach following the dismissal of David Quinn. The Buffalo Sabres recently resolved their coaching situation by hiring Lindy Ruff.

Berube was relieved of his duties by the St. Louis Blues in December after six seasons, during which he notably guided them to a Stanley Cup victory in 2019. He achieved playoff appearances in his first four seasons but faltered in the fifth before his dismissal mid-season.

Prior to his tenure with the Blues, Berube served as head coach for the Flyers for two seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15.

The Senators, who have not reached the playoffs since 2017, are seeking a turnaround under potential leadership from Berube. With promising players like Brady Tkachuk, Tim Stutzle, and Jake Sanderson, Berube would have a solid foundation to work with.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, signs point to Craig Berube potentially taking the helm of the Senators at the beginning of the upcoming season.
