Kevin Gausman helps the Blue Jays end their losing streak by taming the Dodgers.
On April 29th, Alejandro Kirk went 3-for-3 with a home run, while right-hander Kevin Gausman delivered seven impressive innings on the mound, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon. The win allowed the Blue Jays to avoid a three-game sweep and snap a five-game losing streak.
Freddie Freeman contributed a home run for the Dodgers, whose six-game winning streak came to an end. They currently hold a 5-1 record on a nine-game road trip.
Gausman, now 1-3 for the season, surrendered only one run, five hits, and no walks while striking out five batters. Dodgers right-hander Michael Grove started the game and gave up three runs and four hits over two innings, with Alex Vesia and Ryan Yarbrough pitching in relief.
Toronto took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Justin Turner, formerly of the Dodgers, singled and advanced to third on Davis Schneider’s double, scoring on Daulton Varsho’s groundout. Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s groundout brought Schneider home, and Alejandro Kirk smashed a home run on a 3-1 pitch for his first of the season.
Gausman navigated around Max Muncy’s leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Freddie Freeman cut into Toronto’s lead with a two-out home run in the sixth, extending his hitting streak to eight games.
In the eighth inning, Yimi Garcia relieved Gausman and walked Austin Barnes before giving up a double to Mookie Betts, extending Betts’s hitting streak to eight games. Despite loading the bases intentionally, the Dodgers couldn’t capitalize as Teoscar Hernandez struck out and Tim Mayza replaced Garcia to end the inning.
Toronto closer Jordan Romano entered the ninth inning, making a crucial catch in right field on Andy Pages’s liner. Romano then struck out the next two batters to secure his fourth save of the season.
