Lightning Coach Jon Cooper Apologizes After Taking Heat for ‘Skirts’ Comment

The Tampa Bay Lightning were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 30 by the Florida Panthers, losing 4-1 in their first-round series. Lightning head coach Jon Cooper expressed frustration over two disallowed goals that hindered his team’s chances of a comeback in Game 5. However, his remarks about goalie interference drew criticism for their insensitive nature, likening protective measures to “putting skirts on” goalies.

Cooper’s comments sparked backlash, with some interpreting them as misogynistic, especially considering the growing prominence of women’s hockey leagues. Realizing his error, Cooper issued an apology the next day, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his analogy and expressing regret for any offense caused.

Despite the playoff disappointment, attention now shifts to whether the Lightning will extend veteran captain Steven Stamkos’s contract. General Manager Julien BriseBois emphasized the importance of retaining Stamkos, who will become a free agent on July 1. Stamkos has been a cornerstone of the Lightning’s success, leading them to multiple Stanley Cup Finals since joining the team in 2008.
