ITS A DONE DEAL: Another mega star player committed to the Denvers Broncos just…

The Denver Broncos have opted not to exercise the fifth-year option on newly acquired quarterback Zach Wilson, a procedural move reported by Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. This option would have guaranteed Wilson $22.4 million for the 2025 season, which is the final year of his rookie contract.

Following a recent trade with the New York Jets, Wilson’s salary will count around $2.72 million against the 2024 salary cap for the Broncos, as they agreed to take on half of his salary to facilitate the trade. Wilson, who was the second overall pick in the 2021 draft, struggled during his time in New York, posting a 12-21 record in 33 career starts. He threw more interceptions (25) than touchdowns (23) and completed only 57.0% of his passes. His performance last season ranked him 34th among 38 qualifying quarterbacks according to Pro Football Focus.

Despite his struggles, Broncos coach Sean Payton emphasized that Wilson will compete for the team’s starting job, alongside first-round rookie Bo Nix, as well as incumbents Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci. Payton expressed satisfaction with Wilson’s talent and stressed the importance of letting the competition play out to determine the best fit for the team.
