Tyler Boyd Had a Meeting with the Chargers During Free Agency; Titans Set to Meet Next
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, several AFC teams are showing interest in a seasoned wide receiver to bolster their depth this offseason. Fowler disclosed that Tyler Boyd, formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals, had a meeting with the Los Angeles Chargers and is slated to meet with the Tennessee Titans later this week. With the NFL draft concluded, Fowler anticipates an increase in Boyd’s market activity in the coming days.
Boyd’s contributions were sometimes overshadowed amidst a talented Bengals receiving corps featuring Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. However, he has consistently performed well throughout his career. He particularly excelled with consecutive seasons of over 1,000 receiving yards in 2018 and 2019 before the arrival of Chase and Higgins. Despite the competition, Boyd maintained solid numbers and contributed to the Bengals’ journey to the Super Bowl in 2021.
During that season, Boyd, a product of the University of Pittsburgh, recorded 67 catches for 828 yards and five touchdowns. He also made five receptions during the Bengals’ Super Bowl defeat against the Los Angeles Rams. In 2023, there was a decline in his production, registering 67 catches for 667 yards and two touchdowns. However, this dip coincided with quarterback Joe Burrow’s absence due to a wrist injury for the Bengals’ final seven games, impacting the entire receiving corps’ performance.
It’s not surprising that the Los Angeles Chargers are interested in Tyler Boyd, especially after parting ways with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams this offseason. Despite drafting wide receiver Ladd McConkey in the second round, they still need depth at the position.
With the Chargers, Boyd could potentially have a more prominent role compared to the Titans, who boast DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, and Treylon Burks at wide receiver. However, the Titans could benefit from additional depth, and Boyd could capitalize on the opportunities created by Hopkins and Ridley.
Having previously played alongside Chase and Higgins, Boyd is familiar with thriving in a similar offensive setup. At just 29 years old, he’s likely to remain productive in the near future, making it probable that he’ll find a new team sooner rather than later.
