During a recent Big Orange Caravan event in Chattanooga, Tennessee Vols Head Coach Josh Heupel shared a positive update on an injured player but stopped short of fully confirming their return for the 2024 season opener. Heupel discussed the status of sophomore running back Cam Seldon, who underwent shoulder surgery in late March.

“His rehabilitation process has progressed extremely well,” Heupel stated, as reported by KnoxNews.com. “He has adhered closely to our medical team’s directives, and we anticipate his continued recovery over the summer with hopes of him being ready for the start of the season.”

While some fans may interpret Heupel’s remarks as a signal of Seldon’s readiness for the season opener, past experiences suggest caution. Notably, last August, Heupel initially indicated that center Cooper Mays would be available for the start of the 2023 season after a medical procedure, but Mays ended up missing the first four games.

Seldon’s status for the season opener against Chattanooga on August 31 remains uncertain, despite the optimistic projections. His return is crucial for the Vols, given his versatility as a rusher and receiver and the team’s lack of proven depth in the running back position. While Tennessee hasn’t actively pursued a running back from the transfer portal, indicating confidence in Seldon’s recovery, it’s prudent to await confirmation of his readiness before making assumptions.
