AUSTIN — The Texas Longhorns faced disappointment in the recent Red River recruiting clash.

According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, defensive lineman transfer Damonic Williams from TCU has committed to Oklahoma, opting for the Sooners over the Longhorns. Williams had recently concluded a visit to Texas.

The Longhorns have emphasized strengthening the defensive line this offseason. Following the spring game, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian openly acknowledged the need to address the depth on the d-line.

“Our defensive line depth is not at the desired level,” Sarkisian remarked. “Hopefully, we can rectify that. It’s a bit worrisome… We lack the numbers. There aren’t enough sizable players. It’s basic mathematics.”

While Texas has already secured transfers from Billy Norton and Tiaoalii Savea from Arizona, Williams’ commitment would have been warmly received.

Williams boasts a track record of starting 27 games since the commencement of the 2022 season, tallying 60 total tackles, 4.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, and one forced fumble. He played a pivotal role on TCU’s defensive line during their journey to the CFP National Championship.

With defensive linemen T’Vondre Sweat and Byron Murphy already drafted, Texas needs to inject experience into what was one of the nation’s top run defenses last season. Barryn Sorrell, Ethan Burke, Alfred Collins, Vernon Broughton, and others will aim to replicate those achievements. In addition to UTSA transfer Trey Moore and Arizona transfer Tiaoalii Savea, Texas also welcomes five-star freshman Colin Simmons to fortify the defensive line.
