Nadal’s retirement at Laver Cup is deemed ‘a potential but unlikely scenario,’ according to Federer’s former coach.

Roger Federer’s former coach, Ivan Ljubicic, recently highlighted the nuanced disparity between what’s possible and what’s probable, particularly concerning Rafael Nadal’s potential retirement at the Laver Cup, as reported by Italian newspaper La Stampa.

Ljubicic, a former world number three, conveyed that while there’s a slight chance Nadal could follow in Federer’s footsteps and retire at the Laver Cup, it’s not the most likely scenario. Nadal’s retirement timeline remains uncertain, contingent upon his ongoing physical condition and competitive drive.

While Nadal’s commitment to playing at the Laver Cup indicates forward-looking intentions, Ljubicic emphasized that Nadal isn’t likely to prolong his career for another decade. Nadal himself hasn’t specified a definitive retirement date, intending to continue until he feels he can maintain competitiveness. Notably, his retirement isn’t imminent, as he plans to participate in events post-Roland Garros, including the Olympics.

Although Nadal’s plans beyond the immediate future aren’t clear, he’s currently scheduled for the Laver Cup and an exhibition in Saudi Arabia later in the year, suggesting an intention to continue competing, provided his physical condition allows. As with many aspects of Nadal’s career at present, only time will reveal his ultimate decisions.
