Interview After the Season: ‘I Have Affection for This Place and Hope to Create Further Fond Moments’ – Mendez-Laing
The 32-year-old experienced his most successful season to date in 2023/24, achieving impressive numbers of goals and assists, which led to his inclusion in the Sky Bet League One Team of the Season.
In 46 league matches, he made significant contributions with nine goals and 15 assists, totaling 24 goal involvements overall. Additionally, he participated in four cup matches, adding another goal and two assists to his record.
Reflecting on the achievement of automatic promotion to the Championship secured with a 2-0 victory over Carlisle United, Mendez-Laing described it as a “special” season for himself and his teammates.
He expressed his joy for the club and everyone involved, highlighting the unity among players, staff, and his family.
Mendez-Laing admitted that he began to believe they had secured promotion when he was substituted with a 2-0 lead against Carlisle, with just 10 minutes remaining. He described the experience as surreal, particularly witnessing the pitch invasion after the final whistle.
Regarding the team’s closeness, Mendez-Laing emphasized its significance in achieving success. He praised the support and readiness of all players, whether they were starting or not, and acknowledged the contribution of those who weren’t even in the squad.
Regarding his personal success, he acknowledged that while promotion was the main goal, he could now appreciate his individual accolades more. He expressed happiness for what he considered his most successful season on the field.
