“Teary-eyed”: Port Adelaide standout Sam Powell-Pepper shares his emotions regarding a “devastating” knee injury.
Port Adelaide standout Sam Powell-Pepper recently spoke with 9News about the emotional toll of his first major injury, sidelining him for the entire season. The 26-year-old underwent surgery for a torn ACL just two days ago, a setback that left him in tears upon learning its severity.
Reflecting on the news, Powell-Pepper admitted, “I’m not typically one to get emotional or shed tears… but it was incredibly difficult not to, realizing my season was abruptly over. It’s truly devastating.”
Supported by his fiancée Brya and uplifted by his two young daughters, Powell-Pepper finds solace in family amidst the challenges. “No matter what happens in life, coming home and seeing my girls running down the hallway, smiling, it’s impossible not to stay positive,” he shared.
Additionally, the Power star has found encouragement from club legend Robbie Gray, who promptly reached out to offer support. “Robbie gave me a call after the injury, offering to chat anytime. I’ll definitely be seeking his advice,” Powell-Pepper revealed.
Gray’s own journey, overcoming a career-threatening knee injury to become a club great, resonates deeply with Powell-Pepper. “He faced a similar situation with his ACL and went on to have an incredible career,” Powell-Pepper acknowledged.
Coach Ken Hinkley has also provided unwavering support, assuring Powell-Pepper of his eventual return. “He believes I’ll come back stronger than ever… Right now, I’m shifting my focus to supporting the team for the remainder of the season and hopefully achieving success together,” Powell-Pepper concluded.
