Commanders General Manager Adam Peters Discusses Jayden Daniels’ Pick

The Commanders secured LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels as the No. 2 overall pick in last month’s draft, sparking the typical speculation beforehand. Rumors hinted at other picks like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy or UNC’s Drake Maye, but Washington’s GM Adam Peters ultimately favored Daniels.

John Keim’s ESPN piece delves into Peters’ evaluation process, noting McCarthy’s strong attributes but Daniels’ allure as a Heisman winner. Peters admired Daniels’ field vision, timing, and running ability, especially against top SEC competition.

Peters was sold on Daniels after a scouting combine interview, where he expressed to team brass that Daniels was their guy. Daniels’ work ethic, including early morning workouts and facility access changes, impressed Peters and reinforced his decision.

Feedback from San Francisco sources like coach Kyle Shanahan and player Brandon Aiyuk further convinced Peters. Despite potential trade offers, Peters remained steadfast in selecting Daniels, with only one offer not meeting his criteria.

While Daniels may not immediately start, Marcus Mariota provides a bridge if needed. Nonetheless, Peters eagerly anticipates Daniels eventually leading the team.
