Amidst the dynamic landscape of college football, there’s been widespread discussion about the adequacy of the NCAA’s governing structure for the sport. Many have proposed the appointment of a commissioner, akin to professional leagues such as the NBA, NFL, and MLB. While the identity of such a figure remains uncertain, the concept has garnered significant attention within the sport.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel has been actively engaged in the evolving landscape of college football. During Heupel’s tenure, the NCAA concluded a previous investigation at the University of Tennessee and attempted to initiate another investigation a few months ago. However, Tennessee and the State Commonwealth of Virginia countered the NCAA with a lawsuit, leading to a pause in all investigations into recruiting violations across collegiate athletics.
Heupel recently expressed his support for the idea of introducing a commissioner while speaking on 104.5 The Zone’s 3HL on Tuesday. “Yes, at some point, somebody grabbing the reigns,” Heupel explained. “You gotta have one voice. Somebody that’s the commissioner.”
