Nick Gordon aids Marlins in dominating victory over A’s, preventing sweep.

On May 6th, Nick Gordon showcased an impressive performance, tallying two singles, a double, and a home run while driving in three runs and scoring twice, leading the Miami Marlins to a 12-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics. Jazz Chisholm Jr., Bryan De La Cruz, Jesus Sanchez, and Christian Bethancourt also contributed by scoring two runs each, helping the Marlins bounce back from a 20-4 defeat by the Athletics the previous day.

This game marked Miami’s highest-scoring affair of the season, surpassing the 10 runs they scored against the St. Louis Cardinals last month. Gordon’s fourth homer of the season concluded a four-run first inning against Athletics starter Joe Boyle (2-5), who exited due to back soreness after completing the inning. Despite allowing just one hit, Boyle was charged with four runs after walking the first three batters of the game and throwing nine consecutive balls at one point.

In the sixth inning, the Marlins extended their lead to 5-2 and then further widened the gap with doubles from Gordon, Jonah Bride, and Bethancourt, along with a run-scoring single from Chisholm. Bride recorded two RBIs, and Josh Bell contributed with a pair of run-scoring singles, including one in a four-run ninth inning. Chisholm and Bethancourt also secured two hits each.

The Marlins amassed a season-high 14 hits, displaying an offensive surge just one day after trading their top hitter, Luis Arraez, to the San Diego Padres. This game marked Gordon’s first career four-hit performance.

Reliever Burch Smith (2-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless fifth inning following an effective four innings by starter Sixto Sanchez. Sanchez departed with a 5-2 lead, allowing two runs and three hits while walking three and striking out two.

Brent Rooker stood out for the Athletics with a single, a double, and two runs scored, but their season-best six-game winning streak came to an end against the Marlins.
