Former Kansas City Chiefs player JJ Birden has paid tribute to current Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes by likening him to NFL icon Joe Montana.

Mahomes, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, possesses the potential to join the ranks of football legends, much like Montana, who spent two seasons with the Chiefs after winning four Super Bowls elsewhere.

In an interview with Chiefs Wire, Birden shared his experience playing alongside Montana during his time with the Chiefs.

“Playing with Joe was truly special because it meant having the opportunity to play alongside one of the greatest,” Birden expressed. “When he joined Kansas City in his 15th year, having already secured four Super Bowl victories and numerous accolades, I viewed it as a chance to learn. I adopted a mindset of seeking clues to success; what could I glean from one of the all-time greats? And I certainly did.”

“What impressed me most about Joe was his approach of wanting to elevate the Chiefs players and organization,” Birden elaborated. “True leaders lead by example. Joe came in, approached each day with the diligence of a rookie, the preparation of a seasoned veteran, led with professionalism, and lifted us up.”

Transitioning to Mahomes, Birden drew parallels between the young quarterback and Montana.

“I see similar traits in Patrick Mahomes,” Birden remarked. “Even in the early stages of his career, he exudes leadership, and leaders inspire others to excel. It’s exciting to witness the potential growth of players like Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy, as Patrick will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in their development.”

Recalling his own experience, Birden emphasized how playing alongside Montana motivated him to elevate his game.

“When Joe started throwing me curl routes, cut comebacks, and goals, I realized the need to enhance my agility, improve my route running, and elevate my overall performance,” Birden reflected. “It ultimately made me a better player.”
