Three alternative options Sunderland should consider to replace Corry Evans, including a former prodigy from Arsenal.

Corry Evans became a regular fixture in Sunderland’s starting lineup after his arrival at the club in 2021. Despite being named club captain and maintaining his position in the squad following their promotion, he suffered a lengthy absence of over a year due to injury sustained against Middlesbrough in 2023.

The anticipation for Evans’ return grew among fans as Sunderland struggled, and he finally made a cameo appearance in the defeat against Millwall last month. Initially signing a one-year extension to remain at the Academy of Light during his recovery, it was uncertain whether his contract would be extended further upon his fitness. However, it now appears that he will be released at the end of his current contract, leaving him free to join another club.

Supporters expressed concern over Evans’ departure as he represented one of the few experienced players remaining at Sunderland. While the club’s transfer intentions remain unclear, they will likely seek to replace both his skill and veteran presence.

As Sunderland considers their options, here are three players they could target to fill Evans’ void:

1. Krystian Bielik: Once highly regarded, Bielik joined Arsenal at just 17 years old but failed to establish himself in the Premier League. After spells in the second tier, including a successful stint at Derby County, he joined Birmingham City permanently last summer. Bielik’s contributions include the most interceptions and headers won for his team this season.

2. Lewis Travis: Formerly a key figure at Blackburn Rovers, Travis fell out of favor and sought more playing time with Ipswich Town. Despite limited appearances, he was part of Ipswich’s promotion-winning campaign. Blackburn may consider reintegrating the 26-year-old midfielder, but other clubs could also pursue him.

3. Han-Noah Massengo: An exciting prospect at Bristol City, Massengo opted to join Burnley on a free transfer last summer after rejecting a new contract. Limited opportunities in the Premier League have led to speculation about his future, with potential for a move elsewhere to secure regular playing time, depending on Burnley’s relegation status.
