Reports indicate that Thanasis Antetokounmpo of the Bucks has sustained a torn Achilles tendon, according to sources.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, a forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, has suffered a torn Achilles tendon and is scheduled for surgery, as reported by The Athletic.

Antetokounmpo, aged 31, boasts six years of experience in the NBA and clinched a league championship with the Bucks in 2021. Recently concluding his fifth season with Milwaukee, he participated in 34 games, averaging 0.9 points per game. Having inked a one-year contract with the Bucks last offseason, Antetokounmpo will be free to explore his options as an unrestricted free agent this upcoming summer.

According to sources cited by The Athletic, the Greek forward sustained an Achilles tear during a workout session earlier this week.

This unfortunate injury, followed by necessary surgery, will prevent Thanasis, the elder sibling of two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, from contending for a spot on the Greek men’s national basketball team. Greece, currently ranked 14th in the men’s FIBA World Rankings, will endeavor to secure one of the final four positions in the 2024 Olympics through the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments commencing on July 2nd. Thanasis notably represented Greece in the FIBA World Cup teams of 2019 and 2023, participating in nine games and averaging 5.0 points per game.

In 2023, during Giannis’s absence, Thanasis assumed a more prominent role within the national team, contributing to the formation of its defensive identity.

“It means a lot to me, it means I have to set the tone 100 percent for the team, try to do my best as always,” expressed Antetokounmpo to the FIBA basketball site.

Throughout his tenure in Milwaukee, Antetokounmpo has maintained an average of 7.7 minutes and 2.4 points per game over five seasons. He has garnered a notable following in the city, earning acclaim as a cherished teammate among the Bucks with his characteristic fervor from the sidelines and his spirited performance on the court.
