Quarterback Matt Ryan, who played for the Atlanta Falcons from 2008 before a season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, has announced his retirement. He reflected on his career as “a hell of a ride,” choosing to conclude it officially by signing a one-day contract with Atlanta, despite not playing last season.

Expressing gratitude, Ryan stated, “I’m honored to retire as a Falcon. You have no control in this profession in where you start. I am so lucky that my start and my finish was here in Atlanta.” He acknowledged the support of Falcons fans throughout his career, emphasizing his commitment to giving his best every day.

Drafted third overall by the Falcons in 2008, Ryan led the team to the playoffs six times and to Super Bowl LI in 2017. Despite holding a 28-3 lead, the Falcons ultimately lost 34-28 to the New England Patriots in that game. Reflecting on the defeat, Ryan admitted, “It hurts. I think that’s one of the things that always a part of you. That falling short of what you ultimately set out to do, but that’s life.”

Ryan, a four-time Pro Bowl selection, concludes his career ranked seventh all-time in passing yards with 62,792 and retires with 381 touchdowns.
