Charlotte Hornets Recruit Assistant Coach from Utah Jazz
The Charlotte Hornets have appointed Lamar Skeeter, currently serving as an assistant coach with the Utah Jazz, to the role of lead assistant on Charles Lee’s coaching team, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Lee, recently appointed as the Hornets’ new head coach, will be taking over from the long-serving head coach Steve Clifford, who will transition to a front office role next season.
Lamar Skeeter, a former standout in Division II basketball, has been chosen as the lead assistant coach on Charles Lee’s staff, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Skeeter has been with the Utah Jazz as an assistant coach since 2014. His coaching journey began in 2012 with the G League’s Cleveland Charge under the mentorship of Dallas Mavericks assistant Alex Jensen, who himself has ties to Utah, having served as a Jazz assistant coach from 2014 to 2023.
Before joining the Jazz, Skeeter worked as a player development coach and video intern under Mike Budenholzer, who was then coaching the Atlanta Hawks. Skeeter’s tenure with the Hawks coincided with Budenholzer’s first season as head coach in 2013, where they finished with a record of 38-44.
Given his diverse coaching background, Skeeter brings valuable insights to the Hornets’ coaching staff. Having experienced the challenges and successes of working alongside first-time head coaches like Budenholzer, Quin Snyder, and Will Hardy, Skeeter can provide crucial guidance to Lee as he navigates his new role. Additionally, Skeeter’s leadership of the Jazz’s Summer League team in 2019 and 2022 showcased his prowess in defensive strategies and player development, skills that align with the Hornets’ objectives of bolstering their defense and nurturing their young talent.
