Emotional Saga: Virginia Tech steal Wisconsin target transfer player

Wisconsin’s prime basketball transfer prospect chooses to commit to Virginia Tech.

Wisconsin’s target in the basketball transfer portal, Jaden Schutt, committed to Virginia Tech last Saturday. Schutt, formerly with Duke, was a sought-after transfer for the Badgers this offseason. However, Wisconsin recently secured commitments from Missouri’s John Tonje and Central Arkansas’ Camren Hunter, closing the door on Schutt’s potential recruitment.

Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Schutt entered the transfer portal after completing two years at Duke. He had a modest average of 2.1 points in 6.9 minutes per game during his freshman year in 2022-23 and missed the 2023-24 season due to an injury.

Ranked as 247Sports’ No. 231 overall transfer and No. 49 shooting guard, Schutt now joins a Virginia Tech program aiming to regain its previous success after consecutive 19-15 seasons.

Wisconsin has secured commitments from three transfers this offseason: Tonje, Hunter, and Xavier Amos from Northern Illinois, bolstering their roster for the upcoming 2024-25 season. The team is poised to begin the season with a robust backcourt rotation, featuring the newly acquired transfers along with Max Klesmit, John Blackwell, and Daniel Freitag. Additionally, they boast a promising trio in the frontcourt comprising Steven Crowl, Nolan Winter, and Amos.

Despite assembling a solid starting lineup, head coach Greg Gard and his staff remain active in their pursuit of one more big man before the season kicks off. Recognizing the demands of the challenging Big Ten schedule, they understand the importance of adding depth to their roster.
