Former Birmingham City Manager Contemplates Surprising Comeback

Football Insider reports that Steve Bruce is eyeing a return to Birmingham City if current manager Tony Mowbray cannot resume his duties due to health reasons. Bruce, who previously managed the club from 2001 to 2007 before controversially moving to Wigan Athletic, has expressed his interest in the role. During his tenure, Bruce oversaw over 260 games, achieving an average of 1.38 points per game. Since then, he has managed various clubs including Hull City, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa, with his most recent stint being with West Bromwich Albion in 2022.

Speculation suggests that the club’s leadership may not want to retain Gary Rowett as manager, and Mowbray’s temporary medical absence in February could potentially lead to a permanent departure. Birmingham City has faced a turbulent season, going through four different managers, starting with John Eustace, who unexpectedly left in October despite the club’s position in the playoff spots. Wayne Rooney took over next after his time at DC United but departed after just 15 games in charge. Mowbray stepped in following Rooney’s departure but had to leave due to health issues, with Rowett concluding the season as manager. Consequently, the team suffered relegation to League One along with Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United.

Bruce, who has been out of management for two years, has reportedly reached out to Birmingham City to express his interest in returning to the helm. While his previous departure from the club may raise eyebrows, his wealth of experience could provide much-needed stability. With his extensive managerial career across the country, Bruce could leverage his contacts to attract quality players within the club’s budget.

Securing promotion from League One won’t be easy, given the quality of teams in the division. However, Bruce’s experience could give Birmingham City an advantage over their rivals. Similarly, Mowbray, if he returns, could also contribute positively. Nonetheless, if Mowbray is unable to continue, Bruce appears to be a strong candidate to take over the reins.
