WNBA REVIEW: The potential impact of Kelsey Mitchell’s comeback on the Indiana Fever’s offense: ‘We could become unstoppable.’
INDIANAPOLIS — Kelsey Mitchell is eagerly anticipating her return to the court.
After sustaining an ankle injury during training for the 3×3 National Training Camp in April, Mitchell has been sidelined for most of the training camp. She was unable to participate in Indiana’s preseason matches against Dallas and Atlanta and only resumed practicing with the team on Friday.
Her return to practice has been gradual. Initially, she focused solely on offensive drills, gradually incorporating defensive work by Sunday.
Mitchell, who played all 40 games for the Fever last season and earned a spot in the WNBA All-Star game, feels ready to return. However, she understands the importance of following the prescribed protocols to prevent further injury.
“I feel really good, but it’s crucial for me to adhere to professional standards both on and off the court. I need to listen to my doctors and follow the proper procedures to ensure I’m fully prepared for the start of the season,” Mitchell stated.
Throughout her recovery, Mitchell has been under the care of Todd Champlin, the Fever’s longtime athletic trainer. Whether she will play in the Fever’s season opener against Connecticut on Tuesday depends on Champlin’s assessment.
Coach Christie Sides emphasized that the decision rests with Champlin, expressing eagerness for Mitchell’s return to the court.
“If Todd gives the green light, it’s his call. I’m looking forward to that moment and having her back, even if it means limited minutes initially,” Sides commented.
Mitchell’s potential return adds a new dimension to the team’s preseason preparations.
“Kelsey brings an explosive energy to the game. It will take some adjustment to integrate her style into our play, but she offers a different level of speed and dynamism,” Sides remarked after Monday’s practice.
Mitchell, known for her scoring prowess, has been a consistent performer for the Fever, averaging 18.2 points per game last season. Her presence on the court significantly enhances the team’s offensive capabilities, particularly with her proficient three-point shooting.
“She enhances our spacing on the court. With her ability to shoot from long range, she adds a valuable dimension to our offense,” Sides explained.
Mitchell’s potential role in the starting lineup alongside Caitlin Clark, Katie Lou Samuelson, NaLyssa Smith, and Aliyah Boston signifies a formidable offensive lineup. Their collective skills present a challenge for opponents, who must contend with multiple scoring threats both inside and outside the paint.
“We have the potential to be formidable. Our versatility and depth make us a unique team, capable of utilizing our strengths in various ways,” Mitchell stated optimistically.
Apart from Mitchell, point guard Erica Wheeler has also missed part of the preseason due to illness. Their presence, both on and off the court, is expected to provide invaluable support to Clark, particularly during the early stages of the season.
“Having experienced players like Kelsey and Erica around is immensely beneficial. They offer guidance and support, which will be crucial as we navigate the challenges of the season,” Clark acknowledged.
