In the afternoon game against the Tigers, the Marlins want to win a rare series.

It was the Miami Marlins who delivered when it counted most.

With the Miami Marlins and the Detroit Tigers locked in a scoreless draw heading into extra time, outfielder Jesús Sánchez scored a run off of “ghost runner” Bryan De La Cruz to put Miami ahead, and A.J. Puk subsequently converted his first save of the year to seal the 1-0 victory.

Miami will send left-hander Trevor Rogers (0-6, 6.57 ERA) up against former #1 overall pick Casey Mize (1-1, 3.58) this afternoon in an attempt to win the series.

Wednesday, May 15th, lineups for the Detroit Tigers against Miami Marlins
Miami’s lineup for the match is as follows:

CF Chisholm Jr. Jazz DH 1.B. Bryan De La Cruz Josh Bell RF Jesús Sánchez 3B Burger Jake LF Nick Gordon, second base Otto Lopez
SS Vidál Bruján C. Nick Forte

The Marlins have lost all seven of Rogers’ starts this season due to his severe struggles. His last two outings against the Oakland Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies combined for thirteen runs (twelve earned) on seventeen hits in just six innings, making them the worst outings of the year.

Although he has never faced Detroit as a starter and their order lacks experience against Rogers, some of the players who have faced him in the past have fared well: DH Marck Canha is 2-7 with two RBIs, while leadoff guy Matt Vierling is 4-10 with a 1.100 OPS against Rogers.

The Tigers lineup is as follows:

CF Matt Vierling, second base Andy Ibáñez CF Wenceel Pérez – DH Mark Canha, third base Gio Urshela RF Kerry Carpenter, 1B Torkelson Spencer SS Javier Báez, C. Carson Kelly

Due to a back injury and Tommy John surgery, Mize missed the previous two seasons. However, he has already returned to form; in his seven starts this season, he has only given up more than three runs in one of them. Although he has only struck out 26 batters in 37.2 innings, his strikeout rate is a career-best 1.9%, and he has only walked nine of the 162 batters he has faced. He has never started against Miami, and the Marlins’ two at-bats off of him, Jake Burger (0–3) and Nick Gordon (0–4), were both fruitless.
