Southampton will need to seek a successor for Alex McCarthy this upcoming summer. McCarthy has unexpectedly filled in as goalkeeper due to Gavin Bazunu’s injury, delivering a commendable performance in the six matches he’s played since Bazunu’s setback, notably shining in Sunday’s goalless draw against West Brom. Despite his recent contributions, the 34-year-old, whose contract expires this summer, is set to depart Southampton after spending most of the season sidelined from the match day squad. Given his availability on a free transfer and his qualification as a homegrown player in England, McCarthy is likely to attract several potential suitors, including Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Celtic, according to recent reports.
Considering McCarthy’s impending departure and Bazunu’s probable extended absence, Southampton would be prudent to secure a goalkeeper who can both fill McCarthy’s void and challenge Bazunu in the long run.
