NBA Review: Major UNC Basketball Transfer Target Starts Tar Heel Visit

Transfer forward Ven-Allen Lubin, who entered the transfer portal on May 1st, almost doubled his scoring average from his freshman season at Notre Dame to his 12.3 points per game this past season as a sophomore at Vanderbilt. Lubin will visit Chapel Hill on Tuesday to observe the UNC basketball program.

If all goes according to plan during Lubin’s visit, he should conclude it with an official offer in hand, even though transfer targets rarely disclose such information.

Furthermore, it wouldn’t be shocking if the 6-foot-8, 230-pound Florida native commits to Hubert Davis and his staff while on campus or soon after returning home, considering the Tar Heels’ need for elite players in the position and the dearth of elite big men still available in the portal.

Lubin, who is ranked No. 117 overall in the 247Sports transfer rankings for this cycle, played for legendary UNC basketball player Jerry Stackhouse during his sophomore season. In 28.2 minutes per game as a full-time starter down low, Lubin added 6.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks to his double-digit scoring average. However, in light of the 2023–24 Commodores’ poor 9–23 overall record, Vanderbilt parted ways with Stackhouse.

Ven-Allen Lubin, 20, still has two years left to be eligible. The 20-year-old Cade Tyson, a former two-year Belmont wing sensation, is the only other transfer the Tar Heels have added. His early arrival in Chapel Hill this week to start on-campus workouts and get ready for summer school coincides with Lubin’s visit, which could help the Tar Heels win the game.
