Bronny James Aims to Boost Draft Prospects at 2024 NBA Combine

This week, Bronny James began his effort to improve his draft position by participating in the 2024 NBA draft combine. The former USC guard underwent various physical tests and took part in scrimmages with other draft candidates. His parents, LeBron and Gloria James, were present to support him.

Early reports from the combine indicate that James is making strides towards his goal. On Thursday, Yahoo! Sports NBA draft analyst Krysten Peek reported that the Utah Jazz “could be interested” in selecting James with the 32nd pick in the 2024 draft, the second pick of the second round.

“The Jazz have expressed interest in bringing Bronny in for an individual workout and could consider him with the 32nd pick,” Peek wrote. “The franchise, under the leadership of Danny Ainge, has been rebuilding patiently. Bringing in Bronny with the hope of attracting a superstar like LeBron could be the spark owner Ryan Smith is looking for to energize the Jazz.”

Being picked at No. 32 would be a significant achievement for James, who is currently viewed as a mid-second rounder at best. Besides the Jazz, the only other team linked to James is the Los Angeles Lakers, who have the 55th pick and would likely draft James to keep LeBron around as long as possible.

The Jazz could be a good environment for James to develop, as they are not in a rush to win after two successful rebuilding seasons. With ample assets, using a pick on James would not be a significant risk. Although Utah has invested in several backcourt players, none have proven irreplaceable, potentially leaving room for James in the future.

However, the Jazz might be disappointed if they draft James with the expectation of attracting LeBron to Utah. LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, has indicated that LeBron will not necessarily follow Bronny wherever he goes. Additionally, the Jazz are not currently contenders, and LeBron, turning 38 next year, still aims to play at a high level. While LeBron might eventually take a lesser role to play with his son, this potential is not enough to justify the Jazz selecting Bronny, despite their numerous picks. It would be interesting to see Danny Ainge attempt this move after years of competing against LeBron in the Eastern Conference.
