Hendon Hooker of the Detroit Lions could be a trade target for the New York Giants.
The New York Giants might soon have a chance to assess quarterback Hendon Hooker’s progress. Despite being a third-round pick, Hooker’s future with the Lions is uncertain due to the team’s significant investment in Jared Goff.
Justin Melo of The Draft Network mentioned the Giants as a potential suitor for the second-year quarterback. Melo noted that the Giants, despite concerns about Daniel Jones’ future, passed on drafting J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, or Michael Penix Jr. in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Jones’ performance in 2023 did not live up to expectations after signing a four-year, $160 million extension last offseason.
The Lions will begin this preseason with a game on the road against the Giants. There is also interest in holding joint practices with the Giants in New York again this year, after hosting them at the Lions’ Allen Park facility last year.
Melo highlighted that Jones has no guaranteed money left on his contract after this season, but an injury guarantee for 2025 could be triggered if he gets hurt and cannot pass a physical. This situation has led to benchings in other teams, such as Russell Wilson in Denver and Derek Carr in Las Vegas. The Giants signed Drew Lock earlier this offseason as a contingency. Hooker could present a higher-ceiling alternative for the Giants.
Meanwhile, Goff, who signed a four-year extension making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks, expressed his desire to stay in Detroit long-term. He told 97.1 The Ticket that he sought security and commitment from both sides in his contract negotiations, which included a no-trade clause, something common in quarterback contracts today.
