Dangerous Move: Carlos Corberan issues a warning to Leeds about Southampton ahead of the play-off final
West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan has warned Leeds United about Southampton’s most dangerous tactics ahead of their play-off final.
Southampton, the team that thwarted Leeds’ chances of automatic promotion to the Premier League, once again stands in their way as they aim for a return to the top flight.
Russell Martin’s team, which finished fourth after a tight race for the top two spots throughout the 2023/24 Championship season, poses a significant challenge.
The crucial match will take place on Sunday afternoon at Wembley, where the two teams will battle intensely to escape the Championship. Given this season’s competition, there is a possibility that the promoted teams might return to the Championship soon.
Southampton reached the final by defeating West Brom, and Corberan has hinted at what Leeds can expect from their opponents. The Spaniard highlighted Southampton’s effectiveness in capitalizing on turnovers, something Leeds manager Daniel Farke should be cautious of.
Reflecting on West Brom’s second-leg defeat at St Mary’s Stadium, Corberan told Leeds Live: “We tried to play in the attacking half and broke through a few times, but overall, we couldn’t overcome their press. They exploited our mistakes to create opportunities and score goals.
“For the first goal, we lost the ball in midfield after breaking their press on one side and having a chance to attack on the other. They transitioned well and scored. That goal made the game more difficult, and we struggled to progress with the ball.”
