In Arizona, the recurring offseason theme involves suggestions for the Cardinals to trade Budda Baker. Last offseason, despite Baker being younger and not in a contract year, there were calls for him to be moved, with some sources persistently advocating for the All-Pro safety to leave the desert.

For instance, Bleacher Report advised the Detroit Lions to pursue Baker in a trade, pointing out the Cardinals’ potential last-place finish in the NFC West and Baker’s contract expiring after the 2024 season. According to Gary Davenport, this could potentially be Baker’s final season with the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, the Lions, amidst high anticipation for their upcoming season, were seen as a potential fit for Baker, who would provide a significant upgrade to their defense alongside Brian Branch. Bleacher Report proposed a trade scenario where the Cardinals would send Baker and a sixth-round pick to Detroit in exchange for a second and sixth-round pick from the Lions. Despite the cost of potentially a one-year rental, it was suggested that acquiring Baker could be beneficial if he helps propel the Lions into a deep postseason run.

Baker’s desire to play for a contender is no secret, and given his prior experience in Arizona, it’s understandable. However, the Cardinals seem committed to retaining him at least through 2024. If the team performs well this season, they may be closer to playoff contention than some anticipate.
