Utah Jazz fans have been closely monitoring Donovan Mitchell’s situation in Cleveland. Utah holds three future first-round picks and two pick swaps from the Cavaliers. As Mitchell approaches the final year of his contract, his decision to re-sign or leave will significantly impact the value of these picks.
The general belief was that Mitchell might be traded this offseason, but Cavaliers forward Maurice Morris suggested Mitchell might stay. On FanDuel’s Run It Back, Morris said, “I think Don really liked it there. He could be himself and was growing into a leader. Fans embraced him well. Don is quiet, hardworking, always in the gym and watching film. Cleveland is a good fit for him. I’d be surprised if he left.”
Even though Utah’s picks from Cleveland don’t start until next year, Mitchell’s decision could affect Utah’s future this summer. Jazz CEO Danny Ainge mentioned in a post-season press conference that they aim to significantly upgrade the roster, possibly via trade. The value of the Cavaliers’ picks could increase if Mitchell leaves Cleveland.
Conversely, if Mitchell stays, the picks from Cleveland and Minnesota, acquired in 2022, might not be as valuable for the Jazz. The Timberwolves have become a top-5 team, and as long as Anthony Edwards is healthy, their first-round picks will likely be late in the round.
Additionally, Utah holds a 2027 Lakers pick that’s top-4 protected, but with LeBron James likely retired and Anthony Davis past his prime by then, it could convert to a second-rounder if it doesn’t convey. Currently, Utah’s own picks are their most valuable, which are crucial for a small market team needing young talent.
This summer will be critical, and Ainge faces a challenging task. The promising blockbuster trades from a year ago have lost some luster. To upgrade the roster via trade, Utah might have to wait and hope for a change in Cleveland and Minnesota’s current trajectory.
