General manager Brad Holmes and the Detroit Lions have strengthened their roster during the offseason, but there are still some concerns, particularly at safety.

The Lions are bringing back last year’s starters, Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu. However, Joseph is recovering from offseason hip surgery, and Melifonwu has a history of injuries. Additionally, Brian Branch, who serves as a backup at the position, will be out until at least training camp due to a foot issue, creating concerns in the slot as well.

With the team aiming for the Super Bowl, adding more depth wouldn’t hurt. Recently, the Lions signed C.J. Moore, but he is primarily a special teams player. NFL analyst Matt Holder from Bleacher Report suggests that the Lions should sign former San Francisco 49ers safety Tashaun Gipson Sr.

Holder points out that Joseph had a coverage grade of 52.3 from Pro Football Focus last season, making the free safety spot a concern for the Lions. In contrast, Gipson had a grade of 73.5 and brings 12 years of experience, potentially serving as a mentor for Detroit’s young secondary. Gipson, who will soon be 34, also has playoff experience, which could benefit the Lions.

Head coach Dan Campbell has mentioned safety as a position that might need more depth. Gipson had a solid season in coverage in 2023, allowing completions on just 55.6% of passes thrown his way, with one touchdown and a passer rating of 65.4. Although his numbers aren’t drastically better than Joseph’s, Gipson offers valuable experience and could be a reliable insurance policy for the Lions as they pursue their Super Bowl aspirations.
