Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has been named the 2024 Good Guy Award winner by the PFWA.
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has quickly made a name for himself as a top young talent in the NFL and one of the league’s more likable personalities. The No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ohio State shone both on and off the field during his rookie season, earning numerous postseason accolades.
Stroud added another accolade on Wednesday when he was named the 2024 Good Guy Award winner by the Professional Football Writers of America. This award, given annually since 2005, recognizes an NFL player for his professionalism and helpfulness in dealing with the media. The other finalists were Cleveland Browns guard Joel Bitonio, Buffalo Bills tackle Dion Dawkins, Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham, and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
“Stroud won the Good Guy Award due to his professionalism and openness with both national and local media. He is consistently available during the week and after games, regardless of the outcome. He understands the media’s role and answers each question thoroughly,” said Jonathan Alexander, PFWA Houston chapter co-vice president and Texans beat writer for the Houston Chronicle. “He is also active in the Houston community without seeking attention, recently volunteering to clear trees and debris from yards in underserved neighborhoods after a storm left many without power for days.”
At Ohio State, Stroud was praised for his thoughtful responses during media sessions. His ability to recall and explain plays has been invaluable to reporters. Despite his rising fame, Stroud returned to Columbus for the Buckeyes’ pro day this spring and engaged with the local Ohio State media, demonstrating his unchanged commitment to supporting the sports media profession.
“First and foremost, I want to give all glory and praise to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It’s an honor to be recognized as the PFWA Good Guy Award winner, especially because it reflects character more than on-field stats,” Stroud said in the press release announcing his win. “I appreciate the media’s role and thank them for considering me deserving of this honor. Shoutout to the other deserving nominees and previous winners.”
