Warrington Wolves have announced the acquisition of Huddersfield Giants captain Luke Yates on a two-year contract starting in 2025, a move first reported by Love Rugby League in April.

The Australian forward is currently in his fourth season with Huddersfield, where he has made 84 appearances and led the team in the 2022 Challenge Cup final.

Yates has been playing in England since 2019, initially joining the London Broncos before moving to Salford Red Devils and eventually to Huddersfield.

Set to join Warrington in 2025, the 29-year-old cited the chance to work under Wire coach Sam Burgess as a significant factor in his decision.

Yates stated: “Playing for Warrington and under Sam Burgess is a huge opportunity for me. I idolized Sam during his NRL career, and working with him is a big draw.

“I aim to lead by example through my work ethic and contribute to the team’s success. I’m looking forward to playing in front of the Warrington fans next year.â€

Known for his hard work, Yates averaged 42 tackles per game in 2023, establishing himself as one of Super League’s most industrious forwards.

He will finish the current season with Huddersfield before joining his new teammates for pre-season training in November 2024.

Warrington coach Sam Burgess praised the signing, saying: “Luke is an exceptional player and one of the most consistent and hard-working forwards in the competition. He will bring quality and leadership to our pack, and I’m excited to work with him next season.â€
