The Detroit Lions have made defensive additions this offseason that could be pivotal for the unit’s progress in the 2024 season. One existing player on the roster who could contribute significantly to this advancement is second-year defensive lineman Brodric Martin.
Martin was drafted by the Lions in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft but saw limited action as a rookie, appearing in only three games.
Both Lions head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have expressed satisfaction with Martin’s performance during OTAs this spring, though they have been cautious not to overstate his readiness for a larger role.
Campbell emphasized the importance of continued progress from Martin during the summer, indicating that training camp would be crucial for his development with full pads on.
Throughout the 2023-24 season, Martin was inactive for 17 of Detroit’s 20 games, recording 3 combined tackles in the three games he participated in.
Although Martin entered the league with some anticipation as a Day 2 pick, his rookie season saw him play just 28 defensive snaps. The Lions added veteran defensive tackle Tyson Alualu late last year, who secured a spot in the defensive line rotation while Martin remained inactive.
Glenn echoed Campbell’s sentiments, emphasizing Martin’s strong work ethic but highlighting that his performance during summer workouts would be more telling than OTAs.
While Martin may not be ready to make significant contributions in 2024, Campbell expressed confidence in Lions’ new defensive line coach Terrell Williams to facilitate Martin’s development.
The Lions have bolstered their defensive line depth with signings like D.J. Reader and the drafting of Mekhi Wingo, creating competition for playing time alongside other defensive linemen like Levi Onwuzurike, John Cominsky, Josh Paschal, and Kyle Peko.
To earn more playing time in 2024, Martin will need to prove himself on the field.
