The Miami Marlins have historically built their most successful teams around strong starting pitching.

Despite being a relatively new Major League Baseball team, Miami has seen some of the sport’s best pitchers, including Dontrelle Willis, Jose Fernandez, A.J. Burnett, and Josh Beckett. The current roster also boasts standout pitchers like Sandy Alcantara, who had a stellar Cy Young season in 2022. Alcantara’s performance included a 14-9 record, a 2.258 ERA, six complete games (one of which was a shutout), and he led the league in innings pitched (228.2) and batters faced (886).

The Marlins are hopeful that their next great pitchers are already in their farm system. According to multiple reports, the team is promoting top pitching prospects Noble Meyer and Thomas White to High-A Beloit.

Meyer, the top right-handed prospect, and White, the top left-handed prospect, have performed impressively for Single-A Jupiter, combining for 68 innings with low ERAs and high strikeout rates. Meyer, the team’s 1st round pick (#10 overall) in last summer’s MLB Draft, has a 2-2 record with a 2.65 ERA and 43 strikeouts. Despite higher walks (23, or 6.1 BB/9), he has shown significant swing-and-miss potential that needs to be tested against better hitters.

White, selected with the #35 pick in last year’s first round, has a slightly higher ERA but better control, recording a 1-1 record and a 3.18 ERA with only 17 walks (4.5 BB/9) in the same 34 innings as Meyer.

Meyer and White are the 1st and 3rd-ranked prospects in Miami’s system and, along with Triple-A Jacksonville’s Max Meyer, could represent the next great wave of Marlins starting pitchers. They will join other top pitching prospects Karson Milbrandt (#7) and Jacob Miller (#15) in Beloit.
