Coventry City man’s summer transfer to charlton….
Rotherham United aim to make seasoned midfielder Liam Kelly their seventh signing of the summer.
According to The Advertiser, the Millers are competing with two other clubs to secure the services of the 34-year-old Coventry City player, with a decision expected by the end of the week.
Kelly has played 180 games for Coventry since joining seven years ago. He captained the Sky Blues to promotions from League Two in 2018 and League One in 2020.
A creative playmaker, Kelly began his career in Scotland with Kilmarnock and later played for Bristol City, Oldham, and Leyton Orient before former Rotherham manager Mark Robins brought him to Coventry, where he became a key player.
Out of contract this summer, Kelly played 19 times last season and was in discussions with Coventry about a new deal. However, after his release, he is set to continue his career elsewhere, with Rotherham as a potential destination.
Two other strong League One clubs are also reportedly interested in him.
Millers manager Steve Evans is working on filling the gaps left by the departure of 17 players following last season’s relegation from the Championship.
Striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, midfielder Shaun McWilliams, left-back Reece James, and experienced defenders Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett, who both won League One with Portsmouth last season, have already signed. Burton Albion midfielder Joe Powell became the sixth new addition yesterday.
Evans commented, “I have to credit the chairman and the board. When I had the chance to return, it was never about my personal terms. It was about whether the chairman and the board would support me, and they have always delivered.”
He added, “We’ve done some really good work so far but still have some fine tuning to do. It’s like we’ve bought a grand piano that looks great in the corner, but it needs tuning. We’ll get into fine-tuning territory after the weekend when we start really breaking down our squad.”
