NFL Report: Dan Campbell does not anticipate that negative pressure will affect LaPorta.
The Detroit Lions enjoyed an outstanding rookie season from tight end Sam LaPorta. The Iowa alum set the NFL record for receptions by a rookie tight end and became a reliable target for quarterback Jared Goff. With 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns, he now faces high expectations for his second NFL season.

However, head coach Dan Campbell hopes that the pressure of increased expectations doesn’t burden the talented tight end. Campbell shared insights on LaPorta’s mindset, expressing confidence that the added pressure won’t overwhelm him.

“I would hope that’s not negative pressure affecting him,” Campbell said. “Even if he doesn’t match last year’s production, it doesn’t mean he won’t help us win or won’t be satisfied.”

Given the Lions’ offensive talent, Campbell suggested that a less productive second season for LaPorta might result from the ball being distributed to other players.

“Some targets might go to Jamo, Saint, Gibbs, Montgomery, or Brock Wright,” Campbell explained. “For LaPorta, it’s about doing whatever job is asked of him to the best of his ability and helping the team win. I don’t see him getting caught up in matching last year’s numbers.”

Changes to the Schedule

There have been numerous reports in recent months about possible changes to the NFL schedule. Speculation continues about adding a game to the regular season, and a recent report suggested the offseason schedule might also be revamped.

While Campbell didn’t express a strong opinion on either issue, he emphasized the significance of preseason games for developing young players.

If the league were to adopt an 18-game regular season, it would likely mean losing a preseason game.

“The hard thing is, man, that’s another game,” Campbell said. “But if you cut a preseason game, you’ve got all these young guys you’re trying to develop every year. Look at how important some of our young players were to our success last year; there’s a process to their development. If they don’t get enough reps, they can’t help you. That’s what you lose. But we’ll make it work. It’s a long season already, and we’ll make it work either way.”
