New information has come to light about coach Mike Brown’s contract negotiations with the Sacramento Kings.

New information has come to light regarding the contract negotiations between the Sacramento Kings and coach Mike Brown. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Kings have proposed a “competitive offer” worth $21 million over the next three years. Sources told The Athletic that the offer includes bonuses which could increase the total value to $27 million, though no agreement has been reached yet. Brown has one guaranteed year left on his contract with a mutual option for the 2025-26 season. Negotiations resumed a week after ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that talks had been “tabled” due to significant differences on a new deal. Brown is reportedly seeking a contract exceeding $10 million annually.

At 54, Brown was unanimously chosen as NBA Coach of the Year after guiding Sacramento to the playoffs in the 2022-23 season. The Kings secured the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with 48 wins, ending the longest playoff drought in NBA history after 16 losing seasons. This season, despite winning 46 games, the Kings did not make the playoffs. They defeated the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the play-in tournament but were eliminated by the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Kings hired Brown in May 2022 after he spent six seasons as Steve Kerr’s lead assistant with the Warriors. Brown is a two-time Coach of the Year and has four NBA championships to his name—one as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs and three with the Warriors. He also led the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in the 2006-07 season and has a career record of 441-286 (.607).

Brown is seeking a higher salary following the lucrative contracts signed by Steve Kerr ($17.5 million), Gregg Popovich ($16 million), Monty Williams ($13 million), and Mike Budenholzer ($10 million) over the past year. In April, Brown downplayed the importance of his contract situation, emphasizing his excitement about the future with the Kings. Despite Sacramento’s offensive ranking dropping to No. 13 this season—a concern for general manager Monte McNair and owner Vivek Ranadivé—the team’s defensive ranking improved from No. 24 to No. 14, reflecting Brown’s focus on physicality and toughness.
