Tennessee Vols Clinch 2024 SEC Baseball Tournament Title Amid Record-Breaking Attendance at Hoover Met
The Tennessee Volunteers, entering the SEC Baseball Tournament as the top seed, emerged victorious on Sunday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, defeating the LSU Tigers 4-3 in the championship game.
Both the SEC and the city of Hoover celebrated a victory with a record attendance of 180,004 people over six days, surpassing the previous record of 171,288 set last year.
Tennessee’s journey began with a 13-4 loss to Vanderbilt on Wednesday after a first-round bye. On Thursday, they bounced back with a 7-4 win over Texas A&M, eliminating the Aggies. The Volunteers continued their winning streak on Friday by defeating Mississippi State 6-5 and then avenged their earlier loss with a 6-4 victory over Vanderbilt in the semifinals on Saturday.
In the championship game on Sunday, Tennessee led most of the game and entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. LSU made a late push, scoring two runs and putting the tying run on second, but Tennessee’s closing pitcher Aaron Combs struck out the final two batters to secure the win.
This marks Tennessee’s fifth SEC Baseball Tournament title, with previous wins in 1993, 1994, 1995, and 2022. The championship game attracted 15,686 attendees, the second-highest in SEC tournament history, and the week’s average attendance of 10,588 set a new record.
Herb Vincent, SEC’s associate commissioner for communications, praised the event, highlighting the great weather and strong community support from Hoover. Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato expressed pride in the city’s efforts, noting the significant renovations that enhanced the stadium’s atmosphere and functionality.
The city invested $11 million in stadium upgrades, including redesigned parking, new sidewalks, and improved amenities, with plans for further renovations. These improvements aim to continue attracting fans and securing future tournament contracts.
Despite the current contract ending, a one-year extension ensures the tournament returns to Hoover in 2025. Mayor Brocato is optimistic about further extensions, citing positive feedback from fans and officials.
Attendees from across the country, including Tennessee fans from San Diego and Arkansas fans, praised the event’s organization and family-friendly environment. Free water distribution during Sunday’s heat demonstrated Hoover’s commitment to fan comfort.
The city will resume contract discussions with the SEC after their spring meetings, aiming for a decision by the end of summer. Vincent emphasized ongoing talks about the future, highlighting Hoover as a prime location for the tournament.
